Frost Protection for Pipework and Equipment

If the outside temperature is cold enough for long enough then insulation alone may not be enough to prevent damage.

Pipework freezing is very much a risk factor in industrial and commercial settings where splits or cracks in pipes cause expensive leaks and widespread damage.

Self-regulating heating tapes are often used combined with an ambient air sensing thermostat.

By setting the thermostat at 5 ºC, if the ambient temperature drops below this, the heating is energised to protect against the possible onset of a freezing condition.

Hot Water Trace Heating

Designers are now often specifying single pipe domestic hot water systems in lieu of existing circulatory types.
In commercial and industrial environments, the remote hot water delivery point could be many metres away from the hot water generator/boiler. This results in lengthy delays drawing off cold water.

Electrical Trace Heating cable provides instant hot water with legionella control. It also contributes to overall cost savings achieved by replacing alternative re-circulation systems.

By combining trace heating and correct thermal insulation, a thermal balance occurs. The heat output from the trace heating matches the heat loss from the pipe. Self-limiting or regulating heating tapes have been developed and are very successful.
